Born on the forefront of the 90’s, I think I can safely say what does and does not sound like music from that decade. You got your beasties, your pumpkins – even some cranberries if you’re into that. So, like most listeners, I had to change my pants after I started playing a 45-minute track Kieran Hebden uploaded to Four Tet’s soundcloud a few days back. All that accompanied the track was one line of text, “Produced by Kieran Hebden 1997-2001. Compiled 2012.” For those not familiar with Four Tet’s output, this spans a period before he even released any music under this moniker.
Hebden’s style has changed at almost every point in his career, but an arc can be seen moving from jazzy sample-based headphone tunes to complex, intelligent dance music, emphasizing the “dance” aspect the genre usually only holds as a backdrop. As someone who prefers his former work but still adores the latter, this was a welcome change of pace.

It’s been a while since I’ve written one of these so allow me to reintroduce myself: I’m Joanie. I often refer to myself as The Red Viper of Terror on-air during The Great American Road Trip – my travel-based music show – and Creepin’ it Real, which I co-host alongside DJ Rebecca Blackout (Becca Conrad) and DJ Alicia Thornberry (Alicia Williamson). Collectively, our “creep”-y little family holds a strong love for cats, so it’s only fitting we’d enjoy the L.A.-based band, Kitten, as fronted by 17-year-old Chloe Chaidez.

With his new mixtape, artist James Ferraro explores self-destruction in the digital age. This theme can be taken literally from his YouTube page, which includes a music video for a track entitled “GTA SUICIDE.” The video delivers on promises, featuring player avatars throwing themselves off virtual skyscrapers in Grand Theft Auto 4. But this theme of virtual suicide comes across more subtly in the satire of the tracks on inhale C-4 $$$$$. Classifying Ferraro’s music in standard genres is near impossible outside of the general umbrella of electronic music, but his beats, prominent use of auto-tune and repetition of a clip that announces “BEBETUNES” throughout the mixtape is an obvious rip on contemporary rap and hip-hop. Most tracks are experimental, and when Ferraro finds a solid, organized beat it’s not long before it dissolves into indecipherable auto-tune, cell phone ringtones, or garbled sampling from iPhone’s Siri. Throughout inhale, Ferraro aims to disorient, and it’s a unique experience to get lost in this collage of digital chimes, ringtones, sirens, cultural references, hollow brand names (who even knows what Pepsi really means??), video game avatars, and virtual currency.
