PREVIEW: Sleater-Kinney at the Anthem 10/25

BY JESS MAKLER//

Sleater-Kinney (SLAY-tər-KIN-ee), empowered punk girl band deemed “one of rock’s most enduring and respected acts” by The New York Times, is making an appearance in DC next weekend- and you won’t want to celebrate Halloween any other way.

The band takes inspiration from the riot grrrl and indie rock movement, and is known for feminist lyrics and left-leaning politics. Sleater-Kinney contributed the protest song “Off With Your Head” to NOFX leader Fat Mike’s Rock Against Bush compilation. In 2017, Sleater-Kinney contributed the single “Here We Come” to 7-Inches For Planned Parenthood, which is a compilation of 7-inch records and digital downloads whose proceeds went to Planned Parenthood. The full playlist can be heard on Spotify.

This influential girl group has been compared to female singers such as Siouxsie Sioux of Siouxsie and the Banshees and Patti Smith. They have also named influences such as Bikini Kill, Mecca Normal, Bratmobile, Throwing Muses and Sonic Youth.

Sleater-Kinney’s The Center Won’t Hold is the band’s first new album since 2015, when they released No Cities to Love. After years of collaboration and inspiring work ethic, rock and roll legends Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker sound more intense than ever.

The new album was produced by Annie Clark (St. Vincent), and deemed “one of the most furious, dynamic records of their career” by the FADER. Rock and roll magazine Rolling Stone gave the album 4 stars, stating “one of America’s greatest bands does battle with modern apathy one thrilling EP.”

With The Center Won’t Hold, Sleater-Kinney gifts the punk music world political insight and emotional impact. The feminist icons continue to challenge themselves both musically and lyrically, breaking every rule you thought you knew about music. This creative new chapter in the band’s musical journey is ready to wow your socks off, and Sleater-Kinney isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
