Shows We're Stoked For: Shark Week and Bass Drum of Death

The last time we saw DC locals Shark Week, they were opening for Mac DeMarco in the basement of an American University academic building. This Thursday, they’ll rile the crowd for Mississippi’s Bass Drum of Death at the Black Cat. Shark Week’s wild psych sound comes alive through performance, almost as if infused with a new, rawer soul. That rough ’round the edges sensibility is the perfect match for Bass Drum of Death, the Southern princes of garage rock.  The black and white checkerboard floor of the Black Cat could withstand a number of things tomorrow night: grooving, stomping, head banging, crowd surfing and plenty of beer spillage.

New Music: Inventions – Entity

Very exciting stuff out today– Inventions (the duo of Mark Smith from Explosions in the Sky and Matthew Cooper of Eluvium) have just released “Entity.” It’s the first single off their upcoming album from Temporary Residence Ltd (out April 1st). It’ll keep you warm during this second round of polar vortex.

WRGW Deserves a Woodie!

As you may or may not know, the mtvU Woodie awards are upon us. What is a Woodie? you ask. It’s a wacky wooden block given to outstanding college radio stations. Why do we want one? No one is really sure. But we definitely want one. Last year, KSUA of the University of Alaska – Fairbanks won… Come on, guys. It’s time to give the District a Woodie.

Interview Alert: LA punks FIDLAR, Tonight 6:30pm EST

You may have heard… WRGW has the honor of interviewing LA punk band FIDLAR TONIGHT at 6:30pm EST.

To preview a new semester of fantastic programming, Tori Kerr, AKA DJTK, will speak to the band live.

FIDLAR is currently on tour, supporting the Pixies. If you’re in the DMV, you can see them on January 26th at the Music Center in Bethesda, MD. They recently released a brand-spankin-new single, “Awkward.”
