beabadoobee at the 9:30 Club, 11/01

BY KATE TWOMEY//

Coming off the heels of a UK tour, the nostalgic indie star beabadoobee is coming to the 9:30 Club on November 1st to rock your world with new, dreamy beats. The twenty one-year-old Philippines-born and London-based artist has been steadily putting out tracks since 2017, ranging from stripped down acoustics to grunge pop. Early projects like EPs Loveworm and Space Cadet saw Bea’s location of her artistic voice, and follow a saga of changing aesthetics and inspirations that chart the development of her unique 90s sound.

The artist’s big break came in early 2020 when Canadian lofi artist Powfu remixed her first single “Coffee” in the hit song “death bead (coffee for your head),” which has since amassed over a billion listens on Spotify. Since this drop, the former bedroom singer has been skyrocketing to fame and “gettin this bread”– soon receiving worldwide recognition as one of the most innovative new artists to hit the charts. She has been touring and collaborating with The 1975, showcasing her authentic tunes and gaining admiration from artists ranging from Taylor Swift to Jaden Smith. Following her 2020 debut album Fake It Flowers, the artist worked with Matty Healy to produce and write some of her catchiest work yet on the 2021 EP Our Extended Play. Both of these projects embody a coming of age story, which when combined with her signature pouty vocals and crunchy guitar hooks, paints a soundscape that gives “main character alt girl” energy like nothing else.

Although beabadoobee is the perfect artist to listen to on angsty walks between classes, it’s definitely worth your time to see this artist here in an intimate DC venue before she starts selling out stadium tours. Tickets for Bea’s Monday, November 1st performance at the 9:30 Club are already sold out, but I’m sure you can find some resales before it’s too late.

You can find beabadoobee’s jams on Spotify, Apple Music, and Youtube. Happy bopping and hope to see you there!
