Dermot Kennedy at The Anthem 3/4

BY KAYLEY NAGLE//

Dermot Kennedy is an Irish singer-songwriter who has rose in popularity after his debut album Without Fear released in October of 2019. His take on contemporary folk is refreshing, with a delicate mix of strong vocals and electric back-beat. Kennedy’s lyrics are a poetic masterpiece, whisking his listeners through a beautiful story of romance and heartache. The record is a vulnerable look into Kennedy’s innermost feelings and demons, forcing his listeners into their own introspection as his powerful words and rhythm crack through to the heart. With inspiration stemming from Bon Iver and David Gray, Kennedy creates art that reflects back at you as you listen, taking you on a journey of self-discovery.

Dermot Kennedy began busking on the streets of Dublin, uploading his music to Youtube and Spotify early in his career. After years of performing, Kennedy picked up speed once his single, “Power Over Me”, grew like wildfire, peaking at number 11 on the Irish Single Charts. Since then, Kennedy has performed at some of the most popular festivals around the world, including Coachella, Lollapalooza, and Bonnarroo. Kennedy has also performed on several late-night shows, including Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Even his rise through the DMV music scene has been one to watch. In just two years, Kennedy has gone from playing smaller shows at venues such as Baltimore Soundstage, The Black Cat, and The Filmore, to a much larger crowd at The Anthem this March.

The only thing more beautiful than Kennedy’s recorded work is his live-show experience. Kennedy will be center stage, guitar in hand, and voice ripping through the crowd. His fans know every word, and are not afraid of singing along at the top of their lungs. His fans are passionate, devoted, and in awe as he soars across the stage. By the end of the night, there is not a dry eye in the house, each person leaving feeling personally touched by his words.

If you want to dig deeper into the soul of music, come out to see Dermot Kennedy, with the support of SYML, on Wednesday, March 4 at The Anthem. Tickets are starting as low as $37.50. Doors are at 6:30 PM.
