PREVIEW Yo La Tengo @ 9:30 Club

BY ANNA LAROCCO MASI// Iconic indie band Yo La Tengo is heading to the 9:30 Club next Wednesday, April 4. The band is originally from Hoboken, New Jersey, which is claimed to be the birthplace of baseball. Their name, which translates to “I have it” in Spanish, was a phrase used in baseball games in the 60s.

Yo La Tengo is known for their soft and upbeat indie-rock sound, as well as covers of favorites such as Cat Stevens. The group has produced 15 albums,  the most recent of which, “There’s a Riot Going On,” was released just last week and has already made the Billboard Top 200. This LP features softer sounds and more lo-fi influences than Yo La Tengo’s traditional fare.

Yo La Tengo’s music features riveting piano solos, deep plunging bass notes, sweet melodies from the singers and their history in music, as the band formed in 1984.

Songs to listen to include “For You Too” and “Above the Sound” off the newest album. The most popular sing-along-songs you should know before heading to the 9:30 club are “Autumn Sweater”, “You Can Have It All”, and “My Heart’s Not in It”. My favorite album is Fade, which features the popular song “I’ll Be Around.”

I highly recommend Yo La Tengo’s upcoming show to indie-rock fans. Tickets are available here.
