PREVIEW Tennis @ 9:30 Club, 1/24

BY VICTORIA MIDDLETON// Indie-pop duo Tennis is coming to the 9:30 Club this Wednesday on tour for their latest LP, Yours Conditionally.

Tennis is the project of husband-and-wife Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore. The pair released their first album, Cape Dorey, in 2011 after completing an eight month sailing expedition. Their sailing adventures provided inspiration for Cape Dorey, as well as albums to come. Their most recent LP, Yours Conditionally, was written as the couple embarked on a five month journey of the Sea of Cortez.

When they’re not sailing, Riley and Moore are based out of Denver, Colorado. In the past year, they’ve toured with acts such as The Shins, Spoon, and Father John Misty. In 2015, the duo was invited to perform at the “Music of David Lynch Event” at the Ace Hotel in Los Angeles, fitting as Tennis sounds like an act you might hear performing at the roadhouse in Twin Peaks.

Tennis’s brand of indie-pop is simultaneously fresh and nostalgic. Moore’s airy vocals begged to be compared to 80s pop-princesses like Debbie Harry, while also having an intangible daydream-eqsue quality all their own. Stand out tracks from Yours Conditionally include the hypnotic-ly melancholy “Modern Woman” and the seductive “Ladies Don’t Play Guitar.”

Tennis will be accompanied by Overcoats, a electronic-pop duo based in New York. The two halves of Overcoats, Hana Elion and JJ Mitchell, began writing music together after meeting at Wesleyan University. Their first LP, YOUNG, was deemed “One of the best albums of 2017” by NPR.

Lovers of indie-pop surely will not want to miss Wednesday’s show. You won’t have to, if you buy tickets here.
