BY: BRIAN SEUCH // Playing at the 9:30 club in Washington DC next Monday (9/11) Nick Murphy is a show like no other. Boasting a unique style mixing electronic sensual beats with his own original vocals, its hard to find other artists that can match his style and success.
Previously, Nick Murphy wrote songs under the name of Chet Faker. Under this cover he released an EP with a fellow Australian musician Flume and one of his own, “Thinking in Textures”. Thinking in textures was an interesting genre bender which invited the listener to challenge traditional album structures and to explore the feelings and emotions which typically underlie artists works in a more direct light. With his EP opener “Im into you” all the way to his more production based “cigarettes and chocolate” Chet Faker reeled in his listeners in a way which is hard to find elsewhere. Following these EP’s, Chet Faker released his debut album “Built on Glass” which further developed his low key relaxed sound, eventually topping charts in Australia.
Now, Chet Faker has dropped his title and taken up his true name Nick Murphy in efforts to fully find his style and move beyond the expectations which constricted his previous persona. Nick Murphy’s music is hard hitting production filled with flowing vocals which turned his latest project “Missing Link” into more of a darker journey than listeners have seen before. Although the style is undeniably different, hearing Nick Murphy give his all in songs such as “Your Time” and “Fear Less” is a welcome transition from Chet Fakers mellow toned down style. Whatever your preference, this is a show that you do not want to miss. As a personal fan I’v been waiting for Nick Murphy to venture past his LA bubble onto the east coast for some time now and this persona shift absolutely marks the appropriate time to do so.
Nick Murphy’s music fits in well on a romantic date night, a quiet rainy day, and in other times while working out or celebrating the weekend. Diverse repertoire’s should be applauded, and I encourage you to do so Monday night.
