SARAH SOPHER // On June 30th, Ernest Greene of Washed Out released the project’s most recent album, Mister Mellow and is now touring to share its live experience. Washed Out will be playing at the 9:30 Club on August 31st.
With hypnotic rhythms and colorful melodies, Washed Out delivers music that can’t help but pull listeners into a trance of bliss and nostalgia. The genre of Washed Out’s music has been described as an amalgamation of indie pop, synth-pop, electronica, and trip-hop.
Behind the project is actually a single artist, Ernest Greene. During some loss in direction after graduating from the University of Georgia, Greene began creating music in his bedroom. He released his first two EPs in September of 2009. After gaining recognition from a few music bloggers on My Space, he played his first live show in New York.
In 2011, Washed Out signed a record deal with the Seattle-based record label, Sub Pop, most famously known its contribution to catalyzing the 90s grunge movement and signing artists such as Nirvana. Sub Pop Records has signed artists such as Beach House, Frankie Cosmos, Father John Misty, and Flight of the Conchords. Since then, Washed Out has received strong praise and has served as an important icon in the chillwave movement.
From late nights on the beach to long summer road trips, Washed Out’s music adds a unique dreamy ambiance to any laid-back environment. Do yourself a favor and don’t miss this show.
