PREVIEW: Perfume Genius @ 9:30 Club 5/15

SAMANTHA HARDY // No Shape, released released May 5th via Matador, makes this Mike Hadreas’ fourth album under the name Perfume Genius.

Produced by Blake Mills who has worked with artists such as Fiona Apple, No Shape has received high praise by critics from Pitchfork stating it is “pure decadence. [No Shape is] his most realized album yet, a tender a transcendental protest record of love and devotion.” Pitchfork gave it an 8.8 and filed it under Best New Album.

This serves as a follow to his 2014 album Too Bright, co-produced by Adrian Utley of Portishead. Too Bright also received rave reviews by many new outlets.

The first single to be released off Hadreas’ latest release was “Slip Away” which premiered on The Fader’s YouTube channel. “Slip Away” was coupled with a visually stunning and vibrant music video directed by Andrew Thomas Huang who is notable for working with Icelandic sensation Bjork.

Since his 2014 release, Hadreas’ has collaborated with the like of the fashion powerhouse Prada for which he covered Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love” for a fragrance campaign.

On Too Bright and previous releases, Hadreas’ candidly sings about his path to addiction and the darker places he found himself in. No Shape, however, speaks to Hadreas’ recovery and his love for his longterm boyfriend Alan.

May 10th marks the first day of his tour which begins in Detroit and ends September 3rd in Stradbally, Ireland. Perfume Genius makes his way to the 9:30 Club on May 15th. Opening for Hadreas is Josiah Wise, known as Serpentwithfeet.

Wise, a trained jazz vocalist and member of the Maryland State Boychoir as a child, proclaims the sound of his project falls under “pagan gospel.” Wise’s 2016 release entitled blisters was produced by another Bjork collaborator, Haxan Cloak. blisters was released via Tri-Angle Records.
