Are you stuck in the suburbs this holiday break? Are you already missing the hip happenin’ indie scene of your college town as Turkey Day slowly approaches? Have you, within two days, already exhausted all of the cool places in town to sip on coffee and blog? Well have I got news for you: Record Store Day Black Friday is upon us!

Now, before you cringe at the phrase Black Friday for its implications of hyper-consumerism and corporate manhandling, allow me to explain this fruitful shopping holiday alternative:

Spun off of Record Store Day in 2007, which falls on the third Saturday of April each year, both events celebrate the culture of the independent record store across the world. Typically RSD is marked by special vinyl and CD releases, artist appearances and meet and greets, various promotional products, and an assorted batch of unique festivities; RSDBF however, happens on a slightly smaller scale and mainly offers special releases for the holiday season. According to RSD’s website, “Black Friday is really more of a special release date then a one-day ‘holiday’ like Record Store Day.”

Nonetheless, RSDBF presents us with the opportunity to seize the cultural frenzy of the retail marathon that will be November 28th 2014, without falling victim to the mass-produced, low-quality storm of consumer manipulation that characterizes nearly every other retail option.

So get out there, support your local, independent record store, and treat yo’self!
