Diarrhea Planet’s Startling, Creepy, Hilarious New Video (weirdly NSFW)

Nashville band Diarrhea Planet has had a hell of a year, with the release of their second LP, I’m Rich Beyond Your Wildest Dreams, and a constant touring schedule across the country. Their live shows (I’ve had the pleasure of seeing them twice at The Rock and Roll Hotel) are exhilarating – I mean, with four guitarists, how could they not be? Add in great lyrics, stage dives, a vague nostalgia for your dad’s Ramones records, and you’ve got a refreshing but familiar punk show. For first-timers, I recommend this video of them performing Born To Run with Titus Andronicus’ Patrick Stickles.

What makes Diarrhea Planet (often referred to as “DP” for convenience and when discussing them in front of your mom) stand out from the legions of punk bands that always seem to be floating around isn’t just their talent. They’re genuinely good guys who smile on stage, talk back to crowd, and don’t take what they do too seriously. For example, at each of their DC shows I’ve attended, one of their local friends has come on stage in a hot dog costume to play tambourine (and in February, eat a banana).

So when I watched the video for “Babyhead” released today, I can’t say I was surprised to see the adult heads of the band members attached to babies bodies from their old home videos. Alarmed? Perhaps. But given DP’s propensity for being the goofy, loveable musicians who sweat a lot, this rather literal video concept seems to make a lot of sense. (Except for the last five seconds featuring well…you’ll see). Here’s the video, and warning, it’s weirdly NSFW.

Sometimes a band can be defined by a dynamic, polarizing, beautiful music video. This isn’t any of those things – but it will make people laugh and (hopefully) convert them to the Church of DP…or at least get them a step closer to a Wikipedia page.
