Dusky: The Well-Oiled Machine of House

For a duo that released their debut LP on Anjunadeep, the trance label run by Above and Beyond, Alfie Granger-Howell and Nick Harriman, together known as Dusky, are proving themselves as major up-and-coming titans of house.

Stick By This, the LP mentioned above, is a beautifully seamless exposition of their use of power, depth, movement and radiance in productions that straddle the territories of different genres. Following the release of Stick by This, the two have been true to what appears to be their trademark formula: the layering of stunning musical textures over buoyant bass lines. I have found this concotion rather addictive; The Flo Jam EP sampler has been on repeat for the past month and a half as I have eagerly anticipated the June 18th digital release.

“Flo Jam”, the title track, uses blatant samples of Aaliyah’s “Rock the Boat” and brings them to new depths. I recall Eats Everything dropping this during his opening set for Maceo Plex and how I couldn’t help but be engulfed in Aaliyah’s warm vocalizations. What’s interesting about “Flo Jam” is how it progresses from such sublime depths and transforms into a rowdy jam that gets the place ready to pop off.

As the title suggests, this is why I consider Dusky the well-oiled machine of house. Similar to a sharp sports car with a lavish leather interior, Dusky’s hybrid garnishes smooth and luxurious sounds with an industrial and metallic edge.
