Soft Healer

I don’t quite know what to say about the Austin-based band Soft Healer. Their sound is unlike any other band that I know of right now. While clearly influenced by psychedelic rock bands of the 60s, they also tend to have a sort of jazzy sound.

The first song I heard from them was Grand Isle, the title song off of their 10″ release on Monofonus Press. After that I was lucky enough to spot a previous Daytrotter session that they had recorded and I proceeded to listen to the session several times. However, it wasn’t until recently that I developed a true obsession with the band. I can’t stop listening to the jazzy, psychedelic songs of theirs that start slow and quiet, but eventually build to a crescendo of guitar, saxophone, and the unbelievably emotive voice of Marie Butcher.

Unfortunately, I have only been able to find a few other songs from them. Along with the Monofonus Press 10″ they have also released a 7″ on Captured Tracks, but I was unable to find anything else. I can only hope that they will soon start to receive the attention that they deserve.
